• Do I need to be a film student to submit an entry?
Not at all. Students of any major are permitted to submit.
• I've graduated. Can I still submit an entry?
This depends on the time of graduation. If you graduated last semester (Fall 2014) then yes, you are able to submit work produced that semester to this year's festival. If you graduated last spring, then unfortunately we will not be able to accept your submission.
• Is there a minimum/maximum length my submission needs to be?
No. Entries have been submitted (and accepted) over the years ranging anywhere from one minute to thirty. However, do note that the festival is programmed with a limited amount of time and blocks, and so running time may be taken into consideration in certain situations.
• What is a log line?
A log line is a one-sentence summary of your entry that defines the main concept, and may feature a "hook" to interest the reader. (ex. A boxer with a loser mentality is offered a chance by the world champ to fight for the title but, with the help of his lover must learn to see himself as a winner before he can step into the ring.) The structure of a log line will differ depending on the category (narrative comedy vs. music video). This year log lines will be printed on judge's sheets to help them quickly recall entries during deliberation, and will also be incorporated into promotional materials.
• I'm unsure about which category best suits my entry. What should I do?
Ask for feedback from fellow students or faculty to help point you in the right direction. While you may note in the "Other Comments" section of the submission form of your uncertainty in category selection, we will only actively seek to move you to another category in very specific situations. You may also ask us at the time of submission for feedback on category selection.
• Where did the Animation category go?
This year it was decided to fold the Animation category into the other six. This was done so that animated work may freely be viewed and judged as narrative or experimental shorts alongside live-action work. And while animation is no longer a category, a new technical award will be given for "Best Animated Short."
• My entry uses music I don't have a copyright for. Is that a problem?
As of now the Film & Media Festival does not restrict the use of copyrighted music. However, note that the use of copyrighted music in your film may present an issue if you are looking to submit it to other film festivals or place it in your portfolio/reel. One alternative we suggest considering is using Creative Commons licensed work cleared for commercial use.
